the ghost of a good thing

consequently thinking about: washington square park 

there is something about the relaxed and easy-going melody of this song that distinctly reminds me of chilling in the park - it takes me back to those times.  it doesn't embody the park, i think wsp's spirit would be impossible for a song to capture, but it does evoke memories of days spent aimlessly sitting at the fountain and the moments of calm it granted simply passing through.  this student-assigned center of "campus" kept me sane freshman year.  so, to see it fenced up to be completely revamped makes me feel as if much more than the fountain is being dismantled.  it pains me to know millions are being squandered on a modification no one even seems to want in a city full of pressing issues.  the least i can hope is that the renovation does not reconstruct the culture of the place.  shattering a loved landmark then rebuilding it is not going to be a speedy affair either.  to have what i regard as practically the only soothing force on our pseudo-campus compromised by the dreary sight of construction for the remainder of my college years is going to make me feel much less grounded.  the park is what kept nyu from being merely a soulless bunch of clustered buildings in lower manhattan.  and sorry to the yankee fans, but i DO NOT want to graduate in a baseball stadium.  i am supposed to graduate in a bohemian village treasure.  grrr.
